HIKES YOU CAN DO YOURSELF |
|
Trails in Khao Sok National Park are well established and for shorter hikes, you may find your own way. Thailand trekking is well organized here. |
| A favorite of the writer is called Bang Hua Raed and is a one-hour hike to a natural Olympic sized pool in the forest pictured right.
The only cost is the park entrance fee, currently 100 baht/person/day.

| Do some jungle trekking with a guide. The guide will keep you from getting lost, point out animals, plants and other things you might not notice by yourself, and provide interesting insights into wildlife – and even his own life - in the tropical forest. |

SCUBA DIVING at KHAO SOK |
The fairy-tale lake at Khao Sok (know as Chiew Lan Lake), measuring 165 square km, is a thrill under-water as well as on land. Once submerged its easy to believe you are suspended in an enchanted forest surounded by stunning rock formations, stalactites and stalacmites.
After a few meters descent, the water becomes cristal clear and the temperature drops to 27c. What’s down there are enormous flooded trees, huge stalactites hugging the submerged limestone cliffs, underwater caves, and curious catfish and other varieties.
With nitrox, you can descend to the Thai temples and villages submerged at the bottom of the lake and a fantastic area which is home to a submerged forest. |

Jungle Survival Experience |

| Challenging, fun, and fascinating, this trip will teach you how to survive in the tropical jungle. The jungle is much less threatening than Westerners think. For example, there are no mosquitoes deep in the forest, only in inhabited areas. And there is a wealth of fruit, roots, leaves, and fish to keep you alive if you know how to find and identify them.

OVERNIGHT LAKE TRIP (not to be missed) |

This 28-km long lake was created when the authorities built a hydro dam starting in 1986. Filled to a depth of 90 meters, it left spectacular limestone peaks popping up all over the lake.
Enjoy boat ridesthrough the enchanting scenery, swimming in the lake, quiet evening kayaking to spot wildlife along the banks, and a 3-hour hike to a cave in the forest. Delicious food. Stay overnight in clean, cozy raft-houses.
If you want more adventure or relaxation, spend one more nights on the lake.

| 1-1/2 to 2 hour canoe trip depending on river current. Paddle yourself or be paddled by a guide down the Sok River, passing forest, fields, orchards, and mountain cliffs. |

| No telling what you might find when you set out at night into the park. Maybe a lemur, civet cat or fireflies. Or the guide might suddenly illuminate a tarantula, a stick insect, or the vibrating stomach of a grasshopper making shrill noises in the jungle night. |

Night Safari by River |
| Experience the adventure of seeing wildlife close-up while gliding quietly by on a native bamboo raft. Our professional English-speaking guide will punt the raft and keep a look for the variety of creatures, such as civet cat, mouse deer, lemur and many others. |

SPECIAL WILDLIFE TOUR (February - May) |

Between February and May each year the water in the lake recedes and we have a very good chance of seeing wildlife coming to munch on the fresh grass at the water's edge. A two-hour boat ride take us deep into the lake. At sunset set off in a slow boat with local spotters, and you are likely to see sambar deer, hornbills and the wild gaur - a massive wild Asian buffalo conspicuous for its white socks and curled horns. You can also take a jungle hike in the footsteps of elephants. |
| Overnight at an isolated and peaceful raft house deep in the lake. In the early morning take a second boat safari for more animal and bird spotting.
