Cheow Lan Lake Quick Facts and Overview

Often described by travelers as the highlight of their entire trip to Thailand, Cheow Lan Lake offers a fantastic blend of adventure, relaxation, and unique natural beauty. Below, we’ll outline what makes the destination so special, from its geological origins to the thriving present-day ecosystem.

The geography of Cheow Lan Lake

Cheow Lan Lake, also known as the Ratchaprapha Dam Reservoir, spans approximately 165 km2 with an average depth of 40 meters and a maximum depth of 90 meters. It lies on the northern border of the 739 km2 Khao Sok National Park in the Surat Thani Province of Southern Thailand. The lake also borders the Khlong Saeng, Sri Phang Nga, and Khlong Yan wildlife sanctuaries, though it is most associated with and accessed through the National Park.

What is the area best known for?

  • Hundreds of dramatic limestone karst, rising 300-600 meters high.
  • Unique and diverse wildlife inhabiting the lake and the surrounding rainforest.
  • The lake’s clear emerald waters.
  • The unforgettable experience of staying overnight in a floating bungalow.

Natural History

The creation of the breathtaking mountainous karst landscape we know today did not occur overnight. Over the course of millions of years, there have been dramatic changes to the ecosystem and topography that we know today as Khao Sok National Park and Cheow Lan Lake.

  • Permian Period (over 225 million years ago): the entire region was underwater and made up of a vast coral reef system that, along with sinking calcareous plankton, accumulated large carbonate deposits. As the Ice Age was ending, increased rainfall caused increased sedimentary rock sedimentation on top of the carbonate layer. The high-pressure system that resulted metamorphosed the carbonate deposits to limestone rocks.
  • Cretaceous Period (135-66 million years ago): underground volcanic activity led to large granitic intrusion in the limestone that at this point was still the sea floor.
  • Tertiary Period (66-3 million years ago): the Himalayas arose from the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This powerful event also uplifted the limestone, granite, and sandstone rocks that made up the seafloor, now exposing them to air and rainfall.
  • Present-day: due to the chemical structure of limestone, it is easily eroded by rainfall and river waters. This is what created the karst landscape in this region that we know and love today.

The creation of Cheow Lan Lake and life before the dam

Khao Sok National Park’s rainforest is over 160 million years old, while Cheow Lan Lake has been around for just 38 years. The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) started building the Ratchaprapha Dam on the Klong Saeng River in 1982. The completion of the dam in 1987 led to the flooding of the valley, which resulted in the creation of the present-day lake.

Ratchaprapha Dam

The rockfill clay-core dam is quite impressive:

  • 95 meters tall
  • 761 meters long
  • Generating capacity of 240 MW
  • Producing 554 million kWh of electricity annually

It contributes to Thailand’s national grid and supports the nearby communities' power needs.

Other benefits of the Ratchaprapha dam:

  • Flood control: during the rainy season, the dam stores excess water in the Cheow Lan Lake reservoir, reducing the risk of flooding in the surrounding areas.
  • Irrigation: water from the reservoir supports the agriculture of nearby farms during the dry season.
  • Fisheries: The reservoir has become an important freshwater fishery, producing around three hundred tons of fish and shrimp annually (EGAT).
  • Tourism: The creation of the lake sparked a booming eco-tourism industry, particularly centered around the lake’s famous floating bungalow accommodation and associated tours, creating new jobs for local communities.
  • Environmental benefits: EGAT also reports that the dam helps mitigate saltwater intrusion and assists with wastewater treatment and dilution in the river system.

Social and Environmental Impacts

However, this transformation came with significant social and ecological costs. The area was once home to the village of Ban Chiew, which now sits on the lake floor. Around 385 families had to leave their homes. Each family received a rubber plantation plot, a piece of land, and a monthly allowance of 1,000 baht. The Thai government also established schools and a medical center to assist in the community’s resettlement.

Many of the animals from the valley were moved to a different location. In a period of 18 months, more than 1,300 animals from 116 distinct species were captured and then released into local protected areas. However, the World Bank reported that around fifty-two species of fish were unable to adapt to the new, deeper aquatic environment. Even now, when boating on Cheow Lan Lake, you can spot the eerie remains of the old forest, a striking testament to how much the area has changed.

Wildlife You Can Spot Today at Cheow Lan Lake

Although the creation of the dam caused habitat changes that some species were unable to adapt to, the rainforest surrounding Cheow Lan Lake remains one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world. Researchers estimate that more than 5% of all species identified on Earth are found in this region. A countless variety of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, insects, and fish call the jungle their home.

While boating or kayaking, you can often spot macaques swinging between the trees and hear the hauntingly distinct morning calls of gibbons echoing across the lake. If you’re lucky, you may get the opportunity to observe a wild elephant or Malayan tapir taking a drink from the water’s edge. This incredible diversity makes Khao Sok National Park and Cheow Lan Lake an animal lover's paradise.

Access to The Lake and Navigating the Park

Most visitors choose to begin their journey in Khao Sok Village, around a 1-hour drive away from the Ratchaprapha Pier. The pier is the only entry point for tourists and is where all tours and boat transfers depart. One of the reasons Khao Sok National Park is such a popular destination is due to its ease of accessibility from anywhere in Southern Thailand. Travelers most commonly arrive from one of the nearby towns of Krabi, Surat Thani, or Phuket, all of which have airports and convenient ground connections.

The easiest way to reach Khao Sok Village is by private taxi or shared shuttle organized through your accommodation or reliable travel sites like 12Go Asia.

There are always two main parts to reaching your floating bungalow or day-trip destination on Cheow Lan Lake. The first involves overland travel to the Ratchaprapha Pier, and the second is a scenic traditional Thai longtail boat transfer.

Step 1: Overland Travel to Ratchaprapha Pier

  • Shuttle transfers (bus or minivan): the most common and budget-friendly option. Your accommodation or tour provider typically arranges this.
  • Private taxis: ideal for those who prefer flexibility, privacy, and direct travel. While more expensive, it can often be the best option for those who decide not to stay in the Khao Sok Village and want to travel directly to Cheow Lan Lake from one of the other nearby cities.
  • Note: There are currently no public transportation options to go to the pier.

Step 2: Longtail Boat Transfer on Cheow Lan Lake

Once you arrive by land at the Ratchaprapha Pier, everyone will continue their journey via a traditional Thai longtail boat, driven by a seasoned local guide. These boats transport guests to their respective floating bungalows or activity sites around the lake. Most raft houses are between a 1-and 2-hour boat ride from the pier, but the beautiful scenic views make it go by fast.

Private boat tours can also be arranged upon request.

If you’ve booked a day trip or overnight bungalow stay through one of the many touring companies or accommodations, round-trip transportation (including the boat ride) is usually included in the package

Park Rules and Entrance Fees - Avoid Unexpected Costs

Khao Sok National Park is open year-round between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily. Access to Cheow Lan Lake is only permitted during these hours, unless you are staying overnight at an authorized floating bungalow.

Notes:

  • Guided night safaris are restricted to the Khao Sok Village area and are not permitted near the lake.
  • For safety and conservation reasons, boats are not allowed to operate in the park between sunset and sunrise.
  • Hiking anywhere within the National Park requires a licensed guide except for a few short, designated trails. Hiking independently in the jungle can be extremely dangerous due to the rugged terrain and the presence of venomous wildlife such as cobras and vipers.

Upon arrival at the Ratchaprapha Pier, foreign visitors will pay a National Park Entrance Fee of:

  • 340 Baht per adult
  • 170 Baht per child (ages 3-14)

For Thai citizens, the fee is:

  • 40 Baht per adult
  • 20 Baht per child (ages 3-14)

Certain activities, such as a trip to the Coral Cave, require an additional entrance fee of 200 Baht per person.

Carrying extra cash is recommended, since, like elsewhere in Thailand, card payments might not always be accepted.

Best Time to Visit for Weather, Wildlife, and Fewer Crowds

Temperatures in Khao Sok National Park typically range between 22-33℃, and the air remains humid year-round due to the dense rainforest environment. The surrounding greenery helps keep the climate milder and more comfortable than other parts of Southern Thailand, though you should always be prepared for rain at any time of year (it is a rainforest, after all).

In terms of weather, Thailand is divided into three main “seasons” that you need to consider when planning your visit:

  • Dry season (December to April): This is the sunniest time of year, with higher temperatures and reduced rainfall. It’s also the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and book your accommodation in advance, as floating bungalows and tours tend to fill up much more quickly.
  • Rainy season (July to October): These months truly put the “rain” in rainforest. Expect hot, humid days with short but intense afternoon or evening downpours. The benefit? Fewer tourists and a lush, vibrant jungle at its greenest.
  • Shoulder months (May, June, and November) offer a balance between good weather and fewer crowds, these months bring occasional showers but also lower prices, better availability, and fewer crowds.
